AJB bamboo doh - review

I fulfilled myself a long time dream by buying a beautiful bamboo do.
Yes, take do. The pinnacle of kendo gear dreams (affordable dreams, don't even think about same do...).

What do we got:

-60 slate bamboo do-dai
-kiji do-dai covered with a thin layer of ki-urushi lacquer.
-almost plain mune with a thin stripe of same (yes, a little bit of fanciness had to be obtained)

The kiji do-dai is basically a raw deer hide which has been polished to a certain level.
No additional layers of lacquer would be needed, normally.
But this fella got a thin layer of deep brown, translucent ki-urushi.
This leaves the do with and deep brown, almost wood-like finish. Beautiful.

The outer surface isn't as mirror-smooth as a regular black urushi do-dai.
Due to the nature of kiji do, having "natural " hide, this is absolutely ok.

At the inside you can see the real bamboo slates, lightly brownish finished.
They also smelled nice :)
But, I have to say that I found the only real flaw on this do here.
The inner finish of the bamboo slates isn't perfect.
There are little bits of glue or something like that and the spacing isn't always accurate.

Although these are really small flaws, they are still there.
But to be honest, it's nothing to complain too much about.

Now the mune,

it is said, the mune is or can be the most expensive part on a do.
I´ve seen a price tag about 1800$ (not kidding) for just the mune.
Ok, it was an all handmade super japan blabla mune, but such things exist.

Anyway, the AJB do normally come with a really nice quality mune as standard.
I thought it would be appropriate to fetch an the additional 150€ to upgrade my mune.
So i got this nice, almost plane designed mune with a small (about 3cm wide) stipe of same.
rather subtle, but still  bit of fancy.

The quality of the leather is outstanding, I´ve rarely seen do with mune made from such a beautiful leather.

Here a close up of the white spot in the middle of the same stripe, so nice....

To preserve this wonderfull do, the lovely guys from AJB send me this awsome do-cover for free :)

Conclusion:

This is a piece of fine artwork, I´m overly happy with it.
If you are willing to invest a little extra time for care an maintenance, you´ll be rewarded with a superb, new do.

I can highly recommend this piece of gear and have to speak in the highest terms regarding the AJB crew for one of the best customer services I´ve ever dealt with.
